A beautifully detailed antique French 18ct gold medal pendant, designed by celebrated French medallist Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy (1848–1923) and dating to the early 20th century.
The central oval medal depicts the instantly recognisable cherub from Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, modelled in raised relief with his chin resting thoughtfully upon one hand. The medal is signed “E. Dropsy” along the lower edge, the signature used by the Parisian engraver and medallist on his works.
Dropsy was active across the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became particularly known for his finely modelled medals and plaquettes. Paris Musées Collections
Rather than a simple circular medal, this example is particularly pretty for its decorative openwork surround. The oval cherub sits within a rhombus-shaped frame embellished with raised roses at each point and delicate leafy detailing, giving the petite pendant considerably more presence and dimension.
Crafted in 18ct gold, the bail bears the French eagle’s head hallmark alongside a maker’s mark. In excellent antique condition, with only very light surface wear commensurate with age
A wonderfully characterful little French antique, and an especially lovely piece for wearing alone or amongst a collection of layered gold charms and pendants.
